Highpoint apartment developers are planning to build a 200-unit apartment complex on Hawthorn Boulevard.
The site, at 1804-1807 Hawthorne Avenue, is home to the offices of the New York-based brokerage firm, Wilshire Associates, which is the developer of the property.
Developers are seeking a variance for a 20-foot high wall, a ground floor, and a roof over the existing buildings.
They say it would allow the building to accommodate up to 20 people and could accommodate up in two stories, although it would need more space to accommodate a third story.
The project is expected to be completed by fall of 2019.
The development would be the largest apartment project in the city, surpassing the 2,000-unit, 1.8 million-square-foot Wilshire Tower project that opened on Fifth Avenue in January.
A new Wilshire building opened in June at the same location.
The developer has not yet announced the name of the developers.
Developers say the project will be affordable to low-income tenants and they will invest in infrastructure such as new bathrooms, walkways, and parking spaces.
The developers are asking for $40 million in funding.
The City of Hawthorne has been working on the development of the Wilshire project since April.
The Hawthorne development, which would be in a mixed-use development, will consist of approximately 15 apartments, according to the city’s website.
The property includes a parking garage, a park and plaza, a hotel and office building, and residential buildings.
The Wilshire Towers project, a similar project, is also slated to open in 2019.
In July, the city released a proposal to build five more Wilshire towers on the site, along with an adjacent residential development.
