The family of former Texas Tech running back DeAndre Carter says they are “shocked and deeply saddened” to hear about the death of their son.
Carter, 24, was found dead Monday night in his apartment in the Lakewood Apartments in Texas.
The Austin American-Statesman reported that Carter’s mother, Terri Carter, said that her son was found “dead” in his bedroom, with a gunshot wound to the head.
“We are saddened by this tragic loss of life,” Carter’s family said in a statement.
“We are thankful that he was not the victim of a crime and that this investigation has concluded.”
The Houston Chronicle reported that police found Carter dead in his room and that his family said they were told he had been shot multiple times.
Carter, a former high school All-American and NFL draft pick, was a defensive back at Texas Tech.
His death came just hours after he was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year.
